School of Rock Boston Tackles “PROG ROCK” on 6/19 & 6/20 at The Middle East in Cambridge

Cambridge, MA – Music Director Bill Galatis labeled this season’s Progressive Rock show “an advanced show”, and for valid reason – artists such as Rush, Yes, Genesis, Tool, Dream Theatre, Jethro Tull, and King Crimson, with their odd time signatures and intricate instrumental patterns and textures, certainly require much more than minimum effort to master. 

Since February 27^th, School of Rock Boston, with a cast of approximately 20 musicians ranging in age from 9-17, has been committed to weekly and sometimes bi-weekly 3-hour rehearsals, in addition to private lessons, to prepare to take the stage at The Middle East on Saturday, June 19^th, and Sunday, June 20^th (1:00 PM both days) with an assortment of keyboards, basses, drums, guitars, and strong vocal manifestations.

Progressive rock (also referred to as prog rock or prog) is a subgenre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s as part of a "mostly British attempt to elevate rock music to new levels of artistic credibility. The Oxford Companion to Music states that progressive rock bands "...explored extended musical structures which involved intricate instrumental patterns and textures and often esoteric subject matter." Additionally, the arrangements often incorporated elements drawn from classical, jazz, and world music. Instrumentals were common, while songs with lyrics were sometimes conceptual, abstract, or based in fantasy. Progressive rock bands sometimes used "concept albums that made unified statements, usually telling an epic story or tackling a grand overarching theme."

School of Rock Boston’s Prog Rock shows on 6/19 and 6/20 are 100% all-ages and open to the public.
